Origins of the Club

The wider Probus organisation is generally agreed to have started in 1965, albeit "who was first" is disputed,  when the Vocational Services Committee of two Rotary Clubs - Caterham and Welwyn Garden City agreed the need for retired professional and businessmen to meet together for fellowship and social activities on a regular basis. The evidence seems to indicate Welwyn were first with the idea and Caterham first to use the name.

Oxted Probus was formed in 1972 by the Oxted Rotary Club - originally meeting at the Cricket Pavilion Master Park and more recently at St Peters Parish Hall, with an original subscription of one pound a year.

The original constitution and minutes of early meetings are shown using the History drop down menu above ("Early Years") .  including the record of our first ladies lunch.

The list of Speakers over the year is available - again use the above History drop down menu ("Speakers") and gives a flavour of the quality of speakers and discussions over the recent history of the club
