Early Years

The early years of the club are surprisingly well documents and work is on hand to transfer these records to the East Surrey Museum.

It is interesting that one of the early committee meetings (November) was tackling an issue still around  today - the extent to which the club should act as a publicist or agent for external agencies. By contrast, it is  clear that members didn't think much of the idea of visits at the August meeting. Also worth noting that our founder members were already thinking of Zoom meetings in September 1972 (well possibly) and air pollution in October.  Clearly India and the Empire were still in the memory of some members (June). However whilst it is only a sample of one, in the records, the charitable donations don't look overly generous (July committee meeting), particularly as the beer was included in the 75p  lunch, would have been fifteen bob only a year previously.

The name "Probus"is an amalgam of the words professional and business. It is also a latin word meaning honest or virtuous from which the English word "probity" is defined

All this work was captured in the minutes of the club's first AGM at which it can be noted that, presumably on the basis that the profit on the meal was 3p per person and on the drinks 1p per person the generosity of donations had improved
